Pros and Cons

SiteGround has gone from an idea among college friends to be one of the major players in online hosting, open-source technology and especially WordPress. We have known and hosted with them for well over 10 years (they have been in business for 15), here are some of the pros and cons we have experienced along the way.

Pros

SiteGround has become the best WordPress hosts you can think of. Servers are fast, tech support is excellent and many helpful features you will not find with other hosting companies.

  • Live Phone and Chat Support
  • Simple signup/ getting started process
  • WordPress works like a charm in seconds
  • Comes with pre-built WordPress templates
  • Friendly support
  • Experienced hosting company
  • Excellent Uptime Guarantee
  • Lower Data Storage Limits - but honestly 99% of wordpress sites will never come close to hitting these limits

Cons

  • Prices do increase, but you are still getting an excellent value for your money

Performance and Reliability

WordPress runs great. Once it was installed, it was very smooth and responsive. We navigated around in the back looking at different sections of the site and it was able to keep up with the speed that we wanted to move at.

For testing the speed and uptime we use Pingdom and other uptime monitoring services. The test loaded the home page of a website. This site had a basic template with one header image and 20,000 of Lorem Ipsum text. It has run perfectly smooth for the past 3 months. At it's best it loads at 500ms and on average runs at 575ms. These speeds are VERY impressive. We hope to test it further with a fully developed site with images and more scripts to load. However, this is a very good indication that it will run fast.

Customer Experience / Ease of Use

SiteGround has mastered the signup process. It all takes place on 1 screen and takes about 3 minutes to do. At the end of the page make sure your selection is correct. The premium support costs extra but you may be able to get free for 3 months.

To add extra's like Domain Privacy, Daily Backup, HackAlert Monitoring raises the cost significantly over the months that you sign up for the service so be sure you pay attention to it.

It is a pain that companies try to stick extras onto the costs. You won't regret being with SiteGround regardless. Over the years of hosting with lots of different hosts, we have learned that the selling never stops. You have to know what you want and ask for it and say no to things you do not need.

After registration, there is an email sent to you and you can log in with your credentials. Soon after a sales rep calls to make sure you were pleased with your hosting decision. Either this is an extremely awesome sales tactic, or they are sincere about wanting you as a customer. We have not experienced anything to suggest the former.

WordPress Softaculous Install

We recommend using Softaculous (a 1-click application installer) to get WordPress installed at SiteGround. It does a great job and takes about 10 seconds. If you use this method, your new WordPress will have some preloaded templates.

If you haven't used WordPress or installed it ever, SiteGround makes it pretty easy. They have tutorials for you and Softaculous makes it that much simpler.

Thank goodness for phone support. If you were worried about getting the help you need at SiteGround, don't. It works great. We came up with a dilemma with our WordPress themes to see if they would help us with a simple and meticulous type of task. We called them up (Support staff was in Bulgaria) and asked them how to uninstall WordPress and reinstall it. We used Softaculous so she guided me to the area where you can manage your WordPress installs.

Once there we were able to uninstall Softaculous and reinstall it within seconds. We have been installing WordPress since 2008 and using Softaculous definitely saves you time. And, with our experience, Softaculous has been a little bit better than Fantastico (another cPanel 1-click installer). It has a better user interface and it seemed (at SiteGround anyway) to have all of the software up to date.

Afterward, we asked about being able to manage the different templates and the support staff offered to send us an email with tutorials on how to do it. We accepted this offer and after we hung up the phone, we were got the email with all of the information we need to install Templates.

One last thing. She kept reminding me that if I found a template anywhere online I could get it installed through them. So if you want, go scour the internet for the best theme, call them up and they will walk you through how to install it. Done and done.

SiteGround was established in 2004 by a group of university friends. They started with a lot of enthusiasm and love of open source technologies. Over the years they have now grown to over 2 Million websites and over 500 employees.

Expert Review

SiteGround does a great job at hosting. We have been hosting with them for a couple months with a demo site and after monitoring by the minute, we have found them to be very dependable. The sign up was simple and easy, accessing the cPanel was easy, and managing our new WordPress site was painless.

SiteGround may not be the best for a beginner with hosting. Their solutions are better for those who self-teach themselves how to progress. These guys are not here to manage your site for you, just host it.

After reviewing we found SiteGround delivers on what you pay for. Their hosting is reliable, tech support is responsive, cPanel is easy to navigate and use and sites run well on their servers

Free WordPress Templates

One thing that was pretty cool; when we installed WordPress using Softaculous, we discovered that SiteGround has their own templates preloaded with the install of WordPress. They are all up to date with the latest 'live preview' that comes with WordPress 3.4.

On that note, they have tons of templates out there. If you sign up for their plans, you get them for free. We looked through them and they have some good ones.

Final Thought

Before starting our account with SiteGround we had heard bad customer experiences due to support staff not being friendly. However, this claim hasn't been proven to us yet. Not by a long shot. We felt like they did a great job.

They have an extensive tutorial library and the support staff is ready to point you in the right direction. The flaw in thinking might be that using a web hosting company means the user won't have to learn how these tools work, but the truth is, in order to have a successful website, you have to spend the time and energy on it. No one will do it for you (for free).

Overall, our criticism could be that SiteGround is has a little bit more technical side to them. You need to have a basic understanding of open source CMS's, how hosting companies work, and know how to ask good questions. SiteGround does not try to win you over, rather, they avidly give you solutions that will help you learn on your own. In our opinion this works better in the long run, but won't work for those who need someone to manage their websites for them.

I have used Siteground since I first started blogging several years ago. At first I was frustrated with some of the installations (wordpress), but after i got through those it has been super awesome. The more people I run into about hosting, they recommend siteground. So i’ll pass it along.
